Chapter 19

Becca tapped on Raven’s open office door and went inside. He was sitting at his desk, his tie loosened, his right leg up on a chair, staring morosely into space. Since the interview with Davy, he had withdrawn into himself and she could feel the waves of frustration rolling off him like sea fret on a cold morning.

Becca felt equally frustrated. After the chase at Robin Hood’s Bay, they’d both been sure they had caught their man. Davy Capstick had shown every sign of being a killer. Indifferent to his daughter’s death, almost certainly violent towards his wife, he had no alibi, no good answer to any of the questions that had been put to him. And most damning of all, he had tried to scarper from the police.

Yet despite all that, they’d been unable to pin a thing on him. The man had proved as slippery as the fish that Kate claimed to have been gutting when she supposedly cut herself with the knife. All their leads had come to nothing and Gillian’s deadline was effectively up.

‘Not a great outcome,’ she said.

Raven appeared to suddenly register her presence. ‘No.’

Becca had been hoping for a little more conversation from her boss. He could be so hard to read at times. She closed the door quietly so that no one would overhear what she was about to say.

‘I was thinking about that other matter.’

Raven gave her his full attention now. ‘What about it? There’s not much we can do with the logbook gone. When I told you I had one or two ideas, I really only had the one.’

‘Well, there must be other records in addition to the logbooks. I don’t know what exactly, but why don’t we grab everything from the archive relating to police vehicles for 1991 and take a look? We might turn up something unexpected. I’m free this evening, if you like.’ Becca realised she had no desire to return home to the flat and put up with Liam’s moods or the general mess.

Raven gave her a glum look. ‘I’m sure you must have something better to do.’

‘No, as it happens. My life is null and void without work.’ She meant it as a joke, but it struck her as depressingly true.

‘Well, in that case, we’d better find you something meaningful to do. But not here. We’ll take the stuff back to my house. Is that all right?’

‘Sure.’ Becca had never been inside Raven’s house and was curious to see it. He’d invited her in once, but then his girlfriend at the time had appeared and Becca had thought it best to make herself scarce. But that girlfriend was no longer on the scene. ‘I’ll meet you there.’

After raiding the archives, they drove in convoy to Raven’s house. Becca parked her Honda Jazz next to Raven’s BMW at the end of Quay Street. The M6 was too wide for the parking space, but the Jazz was dinky, so there was room for the two of them side by side.
